With Giving Tuesday just one short week away, we’d like to share one last client story with you. Here is how our Housing Counseling Program (HCP) helped one DC resident achieve her long-held homeownership dreams:
Our client reached out to ULS in April. She had recently decided to not renew her rental lease and, instead, work towards becoming a homeowner. With the help of a dedicated HCP housing counselor, our client applied for the District’s Home Purchase Assistance Program (HPAP) and Employer-Assisted Housing Program (EAHP). Much to her delight, she received a notice of eligibility from both programs one month later! Now, she just had to focus on finding her new home.
Unfortunately, this summer’s HPAP funding freeze complicated matters. Alongside hundreds of HPAP applicants, our client worried that the program would be unable to finance her housing purchase after all. Our housing counselor provided her with much-needed reassurance, encouraging her to remain hopeful that her loans would be granted. Luckily, this was the case, and, 60 days later, our client became a proud, first-time homeowner!
This client’s experience is one example of the work that HCP does to keep long-time, Black and Brown Washingtonians in their communities as rising housing prices force many out of their neighborhoods. Your donation on November 28th can directly contribute to these efforts by financing our dedicated housing counselors’ work. Stay tuned for more information!
